The Sliding House, a unique architectural marvel in East Anglia, defies conventional building norms with its innovative design and exceptional environmental performance. Commissioned as a retirement haven for a nature-loving client, it seamlessly combines elements of traditional farm structures with a modern twist. Divided into three distinct sections—a house, garage, and annexe—the Sliding House boasts a remarkable 20-tonne mobile roof/wall enclosure that glides along railway tracks, offering versatile living spaces, open-air experiences, and captivating framed views. This dynamic movement is orchestrated by concealed electric motors, seamlessly integrated into the wall structure. Complementing its functional brilliance, the house showcases a striking blend of materials—glass, red rubber membrane, and red and black stained larch. Built on a concrete raft foundation, the timber-framed structure is adorned with larch rainscreen, with half of the house featuring a fully glazed aluminum design that defines the living areas. The sliding roof structure, constructed from steel and timber, is clad in natural larch and a red weatherproof membrane, providing shade in summer and heat retention in winter. The Sliding House represents a groundbreaking approach to architectural design, offering ever-changing spaces, sunlight, and breathtaking vistas through its responsive and innovative construction, allowing occupants to customize their living experience according to season, weather, or personal preferences.
